2. Holbox

Holbox, which means "black hole" in Maya, is a genuine tropical paradise. This small, charming, laid back island offers unique gastronomy, adventure and natural beauty. To get there, make your way to the port of Chiquilá and then take a boat to the island.

Tip: Visit Holbox during Whale Shark season, which begins in May, and swim with the biggest fish in the ocean.

One of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, Mérida is a great place for history buffs, who will enjoy walking the downtown streets, spotting landmarks or taking a buggy ride down Paseo de Montejo.
