Isla Mujeres is a small tropical island paradise located just 12 kilometers (about 4 miles) off the coast of Cancun. It's the perfect place to visit for a day during your Cancun vacation. Rent a golf cart and circle the island, stopping at all of the sites along the way, or just head to unbelievably beautiful North Beach and relax at a beach club. Before heading back to Cancun, take a stroll through the downtown area, where you’ll find shops, restaurants and cafes.

Before you can enjoy Isla Mujeres, you have to get there, and everyone knows that getting there is half the fun. Here is How to Get to Isla Mujeres...

1. Take a tour

Cancun tours

Isla Mujeres is the final destination for many different tours. You can take one of Caribbean Carnaval's many excursions or try a catamaran trip. Generally tours include all you and eat and drink and a private beach club on the island. Prices start around 75 USD per person.

2. Ultramar

These safe modern ferries are the most popular way to get to the island. There are many different ports located right in the Hotel Zone and the main port, Puerto Juarez, is located downtown. The adult roundtrip fare is about 140 pesos per person. Cold beer, soft drinks and snacks are available along with both air-conditioned and open-air seating.

*Tip: Get in line early so that you can get a seat upstairs and outside where live musicians perform.

3. Car Ferry

If you have a lot of time and not much money, take the Maritima Isla Mujeres car ferry from Punta Sam, which is just north of Puerto Juarez. They charge approximately 250 pesos (about 20 USD) for a regular sized car with one passenger. You don't have to have a car to take this ferry and the price is a very reasonable at 35 pesos per person. Of course, the trip will be a little longer, around 45 minutes. They only make a few trips to the island each day.

4. Water Taxi

This is the off-the-beaten-track way to get to the island. There are many water taxis in Puerto Juarez available to transport tourists to the island. Ask around a bit and find out how to hire your own private little boat. Beware, you might be in for a bumpy ride and it's possible your luggage might get a little wet!

5. Barcos Magaña

ferry Isla Mujeres

Another ferry company located in Puerto Juarez is Transportes Marítimos Magaña. This company has been in operation for many years and their boats are smaller and more rustic, which makes for a nice relaxing 20 minute ride over to the island. They are very economical and charge about 35 pesos per person. If you're running late you can pay the fare on the dock or on the boat.
